Its owner, David Whitney Jr., was one of the wealthiest people in Michigan at the time of its construction.

The dining rooms on the first and second floors were named after their original purpose and each is uniquely furnished. The third floor became a cocktail lounge named the Winter Garden. The Whitney restaurant went on to become a culinary leader in the Detroit area for many years. The Whitney mansion changed hands again in 2007, when Kughn sold the mansion to Bud Liebler, a former Chrysler executive, for more than $2 million. He originally wanted to buy only the carriage house, but Kughn would sell it only as a package deal. Liebler shut the restaurant down for a few weeks to do some renovations, including toning down some of the 1980s paint choices, restore the wood finishes and update the menu.

Not only is it home to an upscale restaurant and a bar, aptly titled Ghost Bar, The Whitney is a spectacle from an architectural standpoint. Grand stairways, endless stained glass, and intricate finishes give it an unimaginable amount of character. The third floor was home to the Whitneys’ art gallery, more guest rooms and small servants’ bedrooms at the rear of the home. The ceiling of the art gallery is vaulted and had a skylight.

The Whitney has events happening weekly, including garden parties and high tea on the weekends, to even seafood boils. "People have a lot of preconceived notions about what we are. That you're going to come here, you're going to sit down, and it's going to be that fine dining, and we offer so much more than that. We do our best to curate every guest experience," Muzzi said. Guests will see a home scattered with vibrant stained glass decadent details, including original Tiffany chandeliers and a secret door, and even listen to ghost stories as the mansion is supposedly haunted. "Beef Wellington is our specialty; the service is going to be top-notch, and it's more about honing in on that entire dining experience rather than just one aspect of it," Muzzi said.

The nurses, with offices throughout the home, continued to maintain the mansion until 1979, when it was sold to entrepreneur Richard Kughn.
